Question:

Will wall insulation help stop hot/cold spots in Sydney bedrooms?

Answer:

Yes, in most Sydney homes it will. Bedrooms with uninsulated external walls, especially west-facing rooms that soak up afternoon sun or south-facing rooms that never warm up, run hotter or colder than the rest of the house, and insulating those wall cavities evens out the temperature. It works best alongside good ceiling insulation, because the roof is usually the biggest source of heat gain and loss.

Why Some Sydney Bedrooms Run Hotter or Colder Than the Rest

Hot and cold spots happen when one room gains or loses heat faster than the others. Many of Sydney’s older brick veneer and timber-framed homes were built with nothing in the wall cavities, so a corner bedroom with two external walls behaves very differently to a room in the middle of the house. West-facing bedrooms are the classic example: the wall heats up all afternoon, then keeps releasing that warmth into the room well into the night.

Existing walls can be insulated without knocking them down. For brick veneer walls, we pump our own Australian-made Insulbloc® wall insulation into the cavity from the roof space, removing and re-mortaring a few bricks under windows to fill the sections below. For timber-framed walls, small core holes are made in the plasterboard, and the cavities are pump-filled through them.

Wall insulation is not always the whole answer. If the ceiling above the bedroom has thin, compacted or missing insulation, or the room has large unshaded windows or draughts, those will still cause temperature swings. That is why we look at the ceiling, walls and floor together, and we can use thermal imaging to show where heat is getting in or out before recommending anything.

Many homeowners also find the room is quieter afterwards, as filled wall cavities help reduce outside noise from traffic and neighbours.
