How Do We Install Wall Insulation?

Insulbloc Brick

Brick Veneer Wall Insulation

Brick veneer walls (“brick skin” on the outside) are not ideal for thermal mass or efficiency. They get hot in summer and continue to radiate heat late into the evening. During winter, external bricks stay cold and soak up valuable heat from your house. One of the greatest benefits of wall insulation is to protect you from the temperature extremes heightened by brick veneer housing.

Reverse brick veneer in comparison is more thermally efficient, as the thermal mass is internal. Despite this, good insulation is still vital when maintaining an optimum temperature inside the home.

How is Brick Veneer Wall Insulation installed?
Insulation is pumped down into the wall cavity via the property’s roof, filling up the width of the wall frame. Where there are windows, we remove the brick and pump under the window to fill this gap, and once complete the bricks are carefully re-mortared into their original position.

Timber Framed Wall Insulation

Timber framed walls are a low mass construction. This means they will rely entirely on insulation to maintain thermal mass and attain optimal comfort for the home. Nearly all homes in Australia use plasterboard as a lining for interior walls, so we can also insulate existing gyprock walls too.

How is Timber Framed Wall Insulation installed?
We don’t recommend removing existing gyprock, as it can be costly to the homeowner. Instead, we carefully core holes into gyprock material and pump the insulation into the voids between studs and noggings, filling the wall cavity. This can be labour intensive, but the process will give you a higher than standard R-rating.

Cavity fill methods available for walls:

  1. Polystyrene balls (if lining or cladding not removed)
  2. Mineral fibres (if lining or cladding not removed)
  3. Bulk batts
  4. Concertina foil batts
  5. Multi-cell foil batts

FAQs About Wall Insulation in Newcastle

Wall insulation can make a substantial improvement to comfort and energy efficiency in Newcastle homes. External walls are responsible for a significant amount of heat transfer, so adding insulation helps keep warmth inside during winter and reduces heat entering during summer. Newcastle’s coastal and inland suburbs often experience temperature shifts throughout the year, and insulation helps stabilise indoor conditions and reduce reliance on heating and cooling systems.

Absolutely. Many existing homes in Newcastle can have wall insulation installed, particularly those with accessible cavities. Cavity wall insulation can be fitted with minimal disruption, while homes with older wall construction may require alternative installation methods. A professional assessment will confirm the most suitable approach for your property’s structure and age.

We supply a range of wall insulation options suitable for Newcastle properties, including:

  • INSULBLOC® – high-performance polystyrene panels

  • Fibreglass batts – such as glasswool or earthwool

  • Polyester batts – made from durable, non-toxic fibres

  • Acoustic insulation – for sound control in internal walls

We recommend the most appropriate product based on your insulation goals, wall type and the thermal performance you want to achieve.

Definitely! Wall insulation slows the movement of radiant heat through the walls, helping keep indoor areas cooler during warm summer periods. This reduces the need for air conditioning and helps maintain a more comfortable living environment. Since insulation resists heat transfer both ways, it remains effective throughout all seasons, not just winter.

The installation process is usually straightforward, especially for homes with accessible wall cavities. Installers create small entry points to place the insulation and seal them once the job is complete. Modern insulation materials do not crumble or shed fibres, which helps keep the process clean. Yes. All insulation materials used in wall cavities are tested to meet Australian safety and performance standards. Polyester and fibreglass options are non-toxic and designed not to release airborne fibres, making them safe for families, pets and individuals with sensitivities. Once installed, the insulation sits securely within the walls and does not affect indoor air quality.

We do. Wall insulation and acoustic insulation can be installed in offices, retail spaces and other commercial environments throughout Newcastle. These products help manage indoor temperatures more effectively and reduce noise transfer between rooms, creating more comfortable and productive working conditions.
