Yes, if your home has raised timber floors. Underfloor insulation slows heat loss through the floorboards into the cold air beneath the house, so floors feel much less cold underfoot and rooms stay warm longer. Customers often tell us they noticed the difference from day one.
Why Timber Floors Feel So Cold in a Sydney Winter
In a raised home, the floor sits above a ventilated subfloor where outside air moves freely. On a cold Sydney night, particularly in western suburbs like Penrith where temperatures drop further, that air chills the underside of the floorboards and draws warmth out of the rooms above. Bare floors feel cold even through socks, and heaters have to work harder to keep up.
Insulation fitted between the floor joists puts a barrier between your floorboards and that cold subfloor air. Homeowners we have worked with describe wooden floors that no longer feel cold first thing in the morning, no more wearing shoes inside to stay comfortable, and running the heater less often. Combined with ceiling insulation, many also find the house stays noticeably cooler in summer.
There are limits worth knowing. Underfloor insulation will not stop draughts coming through wide gaps between old floorboards or under skirting boards, as those gaps need sealing separately. It also does not apply to homes on a concrete slab. For the biggest comfort gain, it works best alongside good ceiling insulation, since the roof is a major source of heat loss in winter.
